Thanks to QuickTime, an animated gif can be played as a movie, while retaining its transparency. This makes it easy to add lively elements to your window. No one would ever guess it's a movie!
This is just a tiny demonstration. It's not hard to imagine doing some much cooler things taking advantage of movies as the basis for animations.
